Terry Pratchett: The Wee Free Men (Bccb Blue Ribbon Fiction Books (Awards))
Rating: 9
One of the best books I've read in awhile - funny and interesting and just a really good read. This one also has a sequel (A Hat Full of Sky), and Pratchett has a whole series of novels set in the same world (Discworld). WFM and HFOS are geared towards young adults, and I liked Wee Free Men better than the adult Discworld novel I read (The Colour of Magic).
Steve Kluger: Last Days of Summer
Rating: 8
A boy book that chicks will dig, too. Funny and sweet story about a boy who is too smart for his own good and the professional baseball player who becomes a sort-of surrogate father to him.
Herbie Brennan: Faerie Wars
Rating: 7.5
Interesting intersection between faerie world and our world - I'm looking forward to reading the sequel (The Purple Emperor).
Blue Balliett: Chasing Vermeer
Rating: 6
Eh. This one has been getting lots of hype, but left me a bit flat.
Mark Haddon: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Vintage Contemporaries)
Rating: 8.5
Did I already review this one? Can't remember...just re-read for a teen book discussion and liked it even better the second time around. Heart-breaking and hopeful.
Jonathan Stroud: The Golem's Eye (Bartimaeus Trilogy, Book 2)
Rating: 8
Good - liked it even better than the first book, Amulet of Samarkand (rating: 7.5).
Dai Sijie: Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamtress
Rating: 8.5
Beautiful story - I listened to it on audio and B.D. Wong does a great job with the reading.
Michael Chabon: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
Rating: 9
Mary Stewart: The Last Enchantment : Book Three of the Arthurian Saga
Didn't finish - the series really went downhill after the Crystal Cave. This one just couldn't keep my interest.
Mary Stewart: The Hollow Hills : Book Two of the Arthurian Saga
Rating: 7
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (Widescreen Edition)
Rating: 9
Eric and I both really loved this movie. Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey were excellent - Charlie Kaufman does it again.
Dodgeball - A True Underdog Story (Widescreen Edition)
Rating: 6
The funny stuff is REALLY funny, but the rest, well...not so much. Rent this one when you're in the mood for stupid humor.
Starsky & Hutch (Widescreen Edition)
Rating: 3
A few funny bits, but not enough to make it worthwhile. Skip it.
The Station Agent
Rating: 9
A quiet movie, with excellent performances. Sweet and poignant.
The Company
Rating: 7
Bowling for Columbine
Rating: 7.5
Fairly subjective, but raises some excellent questions.
Donnie Darko
Rating: 8
Bizarre, but in a good way.
The City of Lost Children
Rating: 8
Wonderful and disturbing at the same time. If you watch it at night you will have bizarre dreams.
The Hours (Widescreen Edition)
Rating: 7.5
Good performances - actually liked it better than the book, which is rare!
Spirited Away
Rating: 8.5
Ack - being sick is no fun. Glad you are feeling better!
